Microsoft ended free security updates for Windows 7 in January 2020. Machines left on unsupported versions are far easier targets for ransomware and viruses.
The same principle applies today: patch operating systems, retire obsolete hardware where practical, and verify backups before an incident — not after. Windows 10 itself left mainstream support in October 2025.
